What a Spring it’s been!  The sun has been shining, skyvans flying, new students becoming licensed skydivers and organizers of every discipline welcoming novice and world class jumpers with a smile and great skydives.

I’m so proud of Skydive Perris when I see the place operating like this. It takes so many people to make it tick and we’re very fortunate to have such amazing individuals that take pride in being part of our team.
The loaders getting everyone on the airplanes safely and efficiently, the bad spot drivers looking out for you at all times and making sure you don’t have to walk too far, the Ground Safety Officer coordinating the airplanes and directing the canopy traffic, Instructors who love watching their students learn, Riggers who pack every rig as if their kid was jumping it, the best pilots in the business, aircraft mechanics that fix airplanes before they break, wind tunnel Instructors who get you in the air even between loads, the Bomb Shelter crew who can handle a huge party or an early morning cup of coffee and the maintenance staff who keep the airport looking like a first class resort no matter how busy we get.

We truly do try to go the extra mile to provide you with a fabulous drop zone and wonderful community.  And if there’s anything we’re not doing I hope you know you can always tell me.

So here’s the catch, operating costs have steadily increased and we haven’t raised jump rates in 7 years.  Starting June 1 jump tickets will be going up from $26 to $28.  This will help us to continue to provide you with the first class service that Skydive Perris in known for.  Thank you for your continued support and making Skydive Perris your home away from home.

See you at the DZ soon!

Perris Newsletter | March 2018

It’s truly amazing how skydiving has expanded, grown and continued to develop over the years. The dream of flight has reached new heights and is still climbing.  I’ve been fortunate to have had a front row seat to much of this and I’ve recently realized that the development cycle within each discipline has been much the same.

In the early days “sport parachuting” was only about having the balls to jump from a plane and burning a hole in the sky. It was more falling than flying. It was all about being or getting “stable” on your belly.  On your belly, you had the best chance of your very questionable parachute working and saving your life.

Then one day someone came up with the crazy notion and thought, “I think I can fly.  I think if there was another jumper in freefall with me I may be able to actually “hook up” with them.”  After many unsuccessful jumps flying near and far from each other with marginal (at best) control, the first two people docked and Formation Skydiving was born (they called it Relative Work then).

As more people learned to do it and got better at it the groups grew and started doing different formations. They began to see how fast they could get together, how many formations they could do on one jump. It became a competition. “We want to go bigger, faster than we’ve ever done before!” (That doesn’t sound like skydivers at all does it?) It evolved into 4way and 4way became the foundation for going bigger. FS jumpers did the first 100way. A new sport was off and running and after 60 years we still haven’t found the limits.

FreeFlying was exactly the same. I remember being on the plane every day with Omar and Olav watching them, jump after jump, completely unstable and out of control (They could hardly get to, much less stay on, their bellies. What were they doing???)  Finally one day they did it, they hooked up while flying on their heads and FreeFlying was born. 4way VFS started. Sequential records are popping all over. FFers broke the 100 ceiling with the first 108way.  The scores go up, speeds increase, records keep falling. Limits?  I think not.

CReW was the same. Except if I recall, I think it started with a canopy collision. The two jumpers lived through it and thought it was fun. But, that it would be much more fun if they actually planned it next time. 4way, 100way….(you get the idea).

Wingsuiting is going through the same cycle.  At the Nationals in Perris last fall it was amazing to see the Acro Competition. 2way teams doing sequences of formations.  It was a thing of beauty, incredible to watch.  If 2 can do it now it will be 4way soon. The 100-way won’t be far down the road.

I’m happy to say that at Skydive Perris FS, FF, WS, CReW and all other jumpers share and enjoy the DZ, planes, and sky together equally. We all are amazed at what the others are doing, cheer each other on and support one another.  It’s really cool.

Each of these disciplines is so much the same yet also unique.  They are all about that dream of flight that we share, but enjoying it in a slightly different way.  They all start with individuals who, first and foremost, had the balls to make their first jump.  And they all evolve into and grow out of 4way.  (You knew that’s where I was going with this, right? :) ).

Come and fly in the skies with us at Skydive Perris!!!

Perris Newsletter | November 2017

We’ve finally recovered from the Nationals!! What a great two weeks it was. The chance to have a front row seat to watch state of the art performances in every freefall discipline was incredible. And to see the mutual admiration, respect and camaraderie amongst all the athletes from those disciplines was a true statement of who skydivers are and the amazing community we have. Perfect weather, as many as 130 loads a day and nearly 19,000 jumps with only three minor injuries made it one of the best USPA Nationals I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot. Special thanks to our staff, everyone who came to watch and especially the competitors.

The Nationals also enjoyed a lot of good media coverage. One comment made by several reporters was that they’d seen few sports like skydiving that are gender neutral, where men and women compete against each other. I explained to them that there is no advantage in skydiving regarding size and strength so men and women compete on an even playing field. Not only that but every year there are plenty of both on the podiums during the medal ceremonies. They were quite surprised by this as they were under the impression that skydiving is a very male dominated sport.

Blocksmixteen 16-Way Team at Nationals

Male dominated sport?? That is definitely not the case at Skydive Perris! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only guy around! Melanie owns the DZ. Shazza runs the school. Sheila is in charge of the Tunnel. Selena is the boss at the loft. Laura is behind the scenes keeping all of us in line. Grace Katz leads the Perris Organizers (Mark Brown thinks he’s in charge but that’s only because Grace lets him believe that.) Kate Cooper-Jensen is the Big Way Master. Christy Frikken is the head FS Coach. Taya Weiss is the WS Guru. Jeanine Bonvin organizes the FF Organizers. There are so many more great female coaches, organizers, instructors, riggers, tunnel instructors, pilots, manifesters, as well as Perris Skydiving School, Bomb Shelter, Wind Tunnel and Square One employees that I can’t mention them all here. Should I continue?

Male dominated?? I don’t think so. No one dominates this drop zone. It’s enjoyed by women and men of all colors, religions, sexual preferences, professions, nationalities, political parties, ethnicities, back grounds, economic statuses and with more opinions than there are people.

But all of them follow the same three, very strict rules we have at Skydive Perris:

1) Don’t be dangerous
2) Don’t be an asshole
3) Have fun.

And we have a lot of fun coming up on the schedule!!

34 As In Thirty-Four!!!!

34! Can you believe it? 34! This year will be my 34th National Skydiving Championships!  I’ve traveled to Muskogee, Oklahoma, Deland, Sebastian, Eloy, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New York and Perris. I’ve gone with practiced teams, pickup teams, playing to win and no chance of winning. It’s the most amazing event in skydiving and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Competitors of all disciplines are some of the most passionate skydivers there are.  Trying to perform at your best and show the world what you can do in the heat of competition is only one part of it. Very few teams actually go with the goal of winning a medal. There is so much more to win than that. You have many of the best skydivers in the world sharing the skies, the planes, and a seat at the bar, with newly “B” Licensed jumpers at their first Nationals. And the Champions are as excited to meet the novices as the novices are the Champions! The bond built at the Nationals between competitors of all levels, across all disciplines, is truly unique and different than the bond built at a boogie or another event. You’ll leave the Nationals having made new, amazing friendships.  You’ll never want to miss a Nationals because it becomes the annual reunion when you rekindle those friendships.

Dan with the original Arizona Airspeed

34!  Did I mention this is my 34th Nationals?!  My mother still asks me every year when I’m going to stop.  There is nothing that could keep me away.  But better yet, this time I get to welcome all of you to my home at Skydive Perris!!  If you’ve never competed before, even if you still don’t have a team, you’ll want to be a part of the Nationals.  Pick a discipline you enjoy, throw a team together with your friends, have a great time and cheer on the champions as they battle it out for the Gold.  All of us are there because we love the sport and the community.  There are no big prizes.  The winning teams don’t walk away with money or endorsements, (they actually walk away in debt).  But we all walk away having made some of the best skydives of our lives with friendships that will last for decades.  I promise you won’t regret it.

A Little Nationals History:

Arizona Airspeed 2000
2000 Arizona Airspeed with Mark Kirkby, Dan BC, Kirk Verner and Jack Jefferies.

1989 was the first year air-to-air video was used for judging at the Nationals.  Prior to that, it was done from ground to air video or telemeters.  The 4way FS Competition was done out of Cessna 182s which only carry 4 people. In order to be able to film using air-to-air cameramen they would send up five Cessnas at a time.  Four Cessnas that each had a 4way team and one that had four cameramen in it.  The four Cessnas with the teams would drop 2 minutes apart while the Cessna with the cameramen would do four passes flying formation with each plane and dropping the cameraman from the trail plane. It was amazing to watch and even more exciting to be a part of!  (Being the nostalgic person I am I tried to make this the plan for this year but couldn’t find enough Cessna 182s to get the meet done in two days with 80 teams.)

At the 1999 Nationals in Sebastian, competitors from across the country had gathered for the meet.  But before the meet even started everyone had to evacuate because of a hurricane.  After the first storm passed and before the second one moved in all the competitors returned and jumped in between some of the most amazing clouds (never through the clouds of course) to get the meet done.  Hardly any teams left.  (The roads and local airports were pretty much closed so they couldn’t leave)

See you for the time of your life at Nationals in September!!!

I love talking with skydiving students and hearing about their excitement, fear, wonder and amazement. Nearly all of them say how the sport is “so much more” than they ever imagined. The only thing I love as much as talking to students is listening to students talking to each other.

The other day I was hanging out at the Perris Valley Skydiving School. There was a guy in his mid-thirties getting ready to do Level 4 speaking with a gal in her mid-twenties who had finished AFF and was going up to do a first solo. He was really nervous about the jump so she was talking him through it. Everything she said was spot on. With sincere passion and enthusiasm, she went through a step by step explanation of everything he should expect, providing him with a perspective that calmed him down and built up his confidence. He listened to her every word, awestruck like she was an expert. And she was! She had just done the exact same jump. She knew how he felt and exactly what he needed to hear. It’s quite possible he got as much out of her coaching as he would have a more experienced jumper or even an Instructor. She was coaching him, mentoring him and she only had 8 jumps!

This reminded me of when I first started jumping. There were a couple of experienced skydivers living near me in the OSU Dorm. These guys were real skydivers, not first timers. They were experienced jumpers who knew the ropes and how everything was done. They were so good. How could they not be, they each had close to 30 jumps. I thought they were heroes!

No matter where you are in your skydiving progression, you’re somebody’s mentor. You probably don’t think of yourself as a mentor and might not even want to be one. But, at some time over the course of your day at the drop zone, you could easily find yourself speaking with a less experienced jumper. You may only have 30 jumps but to someone with 5, you’re amazing! By sharing your thoughts and experiences you could have a huge impact in helping them progress and grow, and not just as a skydiver but as a human being. As young jumpers, we remember those people who made a difference for us. And in remembering how they helped us, it makes us want to do the same with younger jumpers when we have the chance to. And even if you’ve only done two jumps you still have something to offer to the younger jumper with one!

This is one of the most beautiful things of our sport. We’re all students and we’re all mentors. Even with 26,000+ jumps and 37 years in the sport I often find myself as a student again. Every time I’ve put on a wingsuit, been grabbed by our local free flyers for a jump, listened to our Canopy Coaches or heard Christy Frikken (one of my students) coaching 4-way, I learn a ton. In this sport, you’re never too experienced (old) to be a student. And you’re never too young to be a mentor. I highly recommend taking full advantage of being both.

Blue skies,
Dan BC

P3 Events Great Success!

P3 TRIFECTA WAS ANOTHER BIG HIT! I’ve watched this in Formation Skydiving, FreeFlying, Wingsuits and CReW. No matter what discipline you enjoy, few things are as much fun as putting together a big group of friends and aiming to share that magical moment when a large formation completes and everyone is “in”. You can feel the electricity in the group when it happens.

18589020_736522433186267_1591352463748484643_o

P3 “Perris Performance Plus” was first formed in 2001 to guide jumpers through safely learning the art, and experiencing the fun and teamwork, of doing “big ways”. Each spring P3 holds the May Trifecta with three back to back events, the Big Way Camp, 100Way Training Camp and Spring Fling. This year P3 welcomed more than 140 jumpers from 24 different countries to Perris. Their jump numbers ranged from 120 to 10,000. Many started off never having been on anything larger than a 6way, others had World Records under their belts.

After 3 days of the Big Way Camp even the least experienced of us were consistently building smooth (most of the time) 36ways and doing it while flying in many different positions. At the 100way training camp each person had the chance to fly a different slot every day on 60ways designed to look much more like 100way formations.

The 60way Spring Fling team did several incredible formations. On some jumps even doing 2 formations with everyone dropping grips in between. It was awesome!! Everyone learned heaps and became much more confident doing large formations. Good times were absolutely had and all made new friends they’ll cherish forever.

Many of the group came for all three events!! I really don’t know how they can pull that off but they did. If you’re interested in being a part of the P3 family please join us for these upcoming events. For more information and to register go to www.p3skydiving.com

World Champions and all around good guys, Travis Fienhage and Andy Malchiodi have made breaking records a hobby.  From November 9th – 12th, they plan on killing the current California State FF Record by doing a 100-way. Skydive Perris is planning to use as many of our fleet of Skyvans as we can to help make it happen. Travis and Andy are collecting the best of the best freeflyers for this one.  If you’re not one of the best yet, you can be by November!  They’re holding FF Big Way Camps throughout the year to get you ready.  Camps are scheduled at Perris on June 23 – 25 and November 7 & 8.

JULY 1, SLIP & SLIDE BOOGIE

You’d think by now I’d know better. But there I was, minding my own business, when Matt Blank, Mike Naddor and Sean Devin came over to my office looking like mischievous kids who just came up with an idea but didn’t know if they should share it because they might get in trouble. I took one look at them and told them to go away before they even spoke. They weren’t going to make it that easy on me. “What do you want to do now?” I asked them not really wanting to know. And the answer was: “Ok, check this out. We want to build a slip n slide in the skyvan, grease it up and go sliding out the back with 10way trains. What do you think?” It was one of the dumbest ideas I’d ever heard, and I’ve heard a lot of dumb ideas. Somehow, the next thing I knew, I found myself wearing nothing but a bathing suit and sliding down a greasy slip n slide out the back of a skyvan with 9 of my closest friends! And it was a blast!! So we’re doing it. The first Slip n Slide Boogie. Come join in the fun of one of the all time dumb ideas!!

JULY 1, MARK AND DARRYLD 40ISH WAYS
Mark and Darryld are known for creating a high stress, high-pressure environment where everyone fears making a mistake, NOT!!! This is the perfect way to get introduced to big way skydiving. You’ll have a blast and a chance to learn from some of the best organizers in the world.

AUGUST 26, SCSL 4WAY MEET
Get ready for the Nationals!! 4way Teams, this is the chance to hone your skills, fine tune your game, and get ready for the Nationals. And to do it at the Nationals location, out of the Nationals airplanes!! Competition preparation doesn’t get any better.

SEPTEMEBER 16 – OCTOBER 1, USPA NATIONAL SKYDIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
If you’ve never been to the Nationals you’re definitely missing out. There are divisions for all experience levels in all the freefall events. A few teams are competing to win. But most are competing to be a part of the most amazing experience you’ll ever have in Skydiving. If you have been to the Nationals before, we know you’ll be here because you just can’t miss it! (This will be my 34th Nationals!) Even if you’re not competing you’ll want to be at Skydive Perris to see the “sport” of skydiving at its very best.

Tunnel Training at Perris

exterior of wind tunnel at Skydive Perris

There is no question that wind tunnels have dramatically changed skydiving training .  In the past the biggest challenge of learning to fly was building muscle memory.  How much muscle memory could you possibly build when you jump like crazy all weekend and only get 10 minutes of actual freefall time?  And only seconds of that working on a particular skill.  Now with wind tunnels you can learn a skill and get 10 minutes of repetition in 20 minutes!

Most of us don’t fly in the tunnel to become great tunnel flyers.  We use the tunnel to become great skydivers!  The Skydive Perris tunnel is right on the drop zone.  At Perris you can do your tunnel training, walk out of the chamber, call manifest and be on a 15 minute call!  You can take everything you’ve practiced right into the air!

No matter whether you’re working through AFF or training to win the US Nationals, the best way to maximize your training is to build the skills in the tunnel and then get on the next load.  Skydive Perris is one of only three DZs in the world where you can do this.  To find out more about how to maximize your tunnel training contact Derek Baxter at email hidden; JavaScript is required.

International Skydiving Museum & Hall of Fame

It’s finally happening!!  Skydiving inspires. It is the embodiment of adventure, daring, athleticism and prevailing in the face of adversity.  Though most people will never make a skydive, they can still revel in the amazing achievements of our sport.  They will be able to do just that in the Internationals Skydiving Museum and Hall of Fame.   The Museum and Hall of Fame will be located in Orlando, Florida in a high profile location fronting on Interstate 4, the primary highway that connects Tampa to Orlando and Daytona Beach.  It will be a two-story facility, 30,000sqft, loaded with interactive exhibits and experiences and co-located with an iFLY 16-foot vertical wind tunnel!

Skydive Perris has long been a supporter of this project and we are so excited to finally see it coming to fruition.  Please go to www.skydivingmuseum.org to learn more about it. You’ll be amazed and proud for what it planned.

Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld

At least once or twice a week I’m told by someone:

“Dan, you have such a great job.”

“It must be terrific to come to work every day at Skydive Perris.”

“You’re so fortunate to be able to make a living doing what you love.”

“It’s not like work if you enjoy what you do.”

It’s kind of insulting really. All of us that work at Skydive Perris put in some long hard days working crazy hours. It’s not all fun and games. There is real work that needs to be done and we take our jobs very seriously. Last week was a good example.

I was contacted by a couple of experienced jumpers that wanted to do four days of 4way training. I tried to schedule one of our coaches to jump with them but none had all the days available. I had to reschedule several meetings and put off other managerial work I had on my plate so that I could get these guys in the air. We met at 8:00 Monday morning, made a jump then went up to the tunnel to fly for an hour. We walked out of the tunnel and immediately called manifest to find out how long it was before the next load.  It was only 15 minutes! We hustled to the drop zone, put our gear on and made that same load. And then did another six jumps that day. This crazy schedule went on all week!

17358934_702978279874016_5004111491239555752_o

Finally, on Friday I thought I was going to have a break, but no. Shazza, our school manager, needed me to help with a couple of AFF students from China who were stuck on Level 5.  Before going on another jump they both wanted to do our “jump insurance” coached tunnel session. None of the other instructors were available so I got pulled in. (It’s like she doesn’t know I have other work to do.)  I went to the tunnel with Will and Kai who each flew for 10 minutes. Everything clicked for them! We got out of the tunnel and they were on their next AFF jumps within 30 minutes. They both passed and went on to get their A Licenses four days later!

Right as it looked like things were slowing down the Sisters In Skydiving “SIS” event got going.  Before I knew it, and completely against my will, I was on a 16way with 13 women and a couple of other guys.

By the end of the day, I just didn’t have it in me to get on the swoop and chug sunset jump. SSo I skipped the jump, not the chug.

If that wasn’t enough, today a group of our local jumpers wanted to see what it would be like to put a slip n slide in the back of a skyvan, lube it down, pull the nose up and slide a train out the back with everyone in their bathing suits.  Well, someone had to keep an eye on that craziness, as the DZ Manager it was clearly my responsibility.

So, if you were under the impression that working at Skydive Perris is some kind of playful, dream job please know you are absolutely right!! It doesn’t get any better! Come visit me at work and join in on all the fun we have coming up!

Blue skies,
Dan BC

“SOS” Skydivers Over Sixty World Record Eventsos-world-record

Sixty is the new forty!!  That’s definitely true in the skydiving world.  In the 1980’s hardly anyone in their 40’s jumped.  It was too tough a sport back then to start when you were 40.  And most people who started in their twenties during the 60s had usually gotten too busted up to still be jumping in their 40s.  Not anymore!!  There’s no stopping us now!!

Additional world records will be attempted for:

  • “JOS” Jumpers Over Seventy world Record April 21 – 23.
  • Women Over Sixty World Record April 23, 24.
  • SOS World Record 66-way April 26 – 30

P3 Big Way Camp | May 4-7

p3-formation-skydiving

One of the most fun parts of skydiving is getting together with friends from around the world to do large freefall formations. There are all sorts of terrific large formation events being held across the entire globe.

To be a part of them you have to have some experience jumping with bigger groups. The P3 Big Way Camp is your chance to get that experience. If you don’t often have the chance to do formation loads, or always get put in the same slot when you do, you’ll want to come to the camp. In 4 days you’ll do it all.

We’ll be organizing jumps between 16 and 60 ways.  You’ll fly as later diver, early floater and from both left and right side trail planes.  If you’re always in or close to the base we’ll give you a chance to fly on the outside.  If you’re always on the outside you’ll have the chance to see what it’s like in (and learn a new respect for) the base.  You’ll to do it all!  If you can dock on a 4way every time we’ll show you how to dock on a 40way.

**Stay for the P3 100 WAY TRAINING CAMP May 11 – 14.  We’ll be doing one 60way after another from 16,500 and switching slots every day.  After these two weeks you will be a whole new skydiver!

2016 was our 40th year of operation. And what an amazing 40 years it’s been!  The 40th-anniversary celebration was a weekend I’ll never forget.  Truly touching, having the opportunity to listen to skydivers from four decades telling stories of what a huge part of their lives Skydive Perris has been.  We are grateful for our wonderful community and the family of skydivers we have had the lifelong honor to be a part of.

Growth – New Jumpers and a Plane!

And our family is growing!  Last year we had 180 AFF graduates.  146 of which got their A Licenses and are jumping with us now!  Some of them are already coaches and working towards becoming instructors.  Others are jumping on teams.  And all of them have enjoyed hanging out at the Bombshelter, flying in the tunnel or looking at the stars from the campfire.

On any sunny day at Skydive Perris, you’ll see skydivers from 18 to 85.  They’re doing 4-way, 8-way, big ways, free flying, wingsuiting, tracking, CReW and angle flying.  It doesn’t matter what discipline you’re into.  We’re all skydivers.  We love safely sharing the skies together, and get off on watching other skydivers fly in amazing ways we may never have tried, yet

With this newsletter, we want to keep you posted on everything happening at the DZ.  And in 2017 there is a lot going on for everyone!

You’re going to see a 5th Skyvan come online bringing our fleet of multiengine aircraft to a total of 8.  Unless of course, you want to include the DC-9 which is on schedule to be back in the air this year!

Let the swooping commence!  Stand by for more info about the new high-performance landing area!!

skydiving videographer and photographer, Craig O'Brien gives a thumbs up before boarding a skydiving plane.

When, where, why and how did you make your first skydive?
My first jump was back on May 15th 1998 in Taft, CA. Air Adventures West. It was a tandem jump. A few days short of my 30th birthday a small group of friends and family organized it as a surprise. I didn’t know anything about it until I was on the DZ. I knew then that I was going to find a way to do this more.

How many total jumps do you have and how many of these are camera jumps?
I have approximately 20,000 jumps and I would say at least 99% are with cameras. Unfortunately I’m not a detailed logger. I’ve won 3 World Championships and 6 U.S. National Championship in Skysurfing as Cameraflier. I’m the head photographer at Skydive Perris and for the P3 Organization.

What canopies do you jump and why?
I jump a PD Spectre 120 and a PD Storm 107. Both with Dacron lines. I participate in all types of skydiving and usually with large groups. Both the Spectre and the Storm are very reliable with soft on heading openings. I have over 10,000 consecutive jumps with no parachute malfunctions on this types of canopies.

How did you get into camera flying and what do you love about it?
I have been into photography since my father introduced me to it when I was 6 years old. My education is mainly in photography but I never really found my niche until I started jumping. On that first tandem jump I know as soon as my camera guy swooped in front of me I wanted to shoot skydiving. I’m so stoked that I was able to marry my passion of photography with an amazing activity like skydiving.

How long have you been based at Skydive Perris?
I’ve been jumping full time out of Skydive Perris since mid 1997.

What is it about Skydive Perris that makes you want to work and play here?
Perris is the best place for me to do my business from since We are jumping most every day of the year, we host numerous record events and its proximity to Hollywood opens many opportunities to work on film and TV productions.

Do you remember your first ever camera jump? What did you film and what camera’s did you use?
I was told I needed 100 jumps before I could jump with a camera, so on jump 101 I made my first video jump. A JVC 8 mm camcorder mounted on top of a ProTec with a chin strap off an old football helmet to lock it on. There was a team of young jumper on the DZ doing 4 way. I fit right in their price range, Free! Just so happened they were all girls too. Little did I know I’d find my wife on that skydive. Our first skydive together of many. But I didn’t wow her with my video skills on that jump. I will say that I had them dead center in frame the entire jump. Too bad I was slightly high on them. You could almost make out that there were 4 jumpers. I’ve since shown some improvements in my 4way.

What skydiving discipline do you most enjoy filming?
I enjoy filming every discipline of skydiving from CRW, belly flying, free flying, and wingsuiting but the lost art of skysurfing is my favorite by far. I wish it was something that jumpers still were interested in.

Do you have a favorite photo that you’ve taken?
I don’t have that one single photo that I consider a favorite. I’m always hoping to improve my techniques and feel my photography continues to improve. I’d like to think that my next photo will be better than the last.

You’ve worked on numerous commercials, TV’s shows and movies, can you name a few for us?
I feel quite lucky to be involved with TV and Feature Film work. The movie jobs are what I really get a kick out of doing. I’ve worked on some really fun movies like Iron Man 1 and 3, The Bucket List, Kingsman, Godzilla, The Hang Over 3, Point Break (the most recent), Charlie’s Angels, Stealth and a few more.

What’s the most challenging project you’ve worked on so far, and why?
Each project has its own challenges and getting the Director what they are asking for is always the goal. For the feature film Stealth I was trying to shoot Stuntman Tim Rigby falling from 30,000ft strapped to a ejection seat. They wanted very specific shots but the chair had a mind of its own. We got some great stuff but it was a challenge to get exactly what our director was asking for.

What advice do you have for anyone who is looking to start flying camera?
My advice for anyone wanting to start cameraflying would be to work on your flying skills first and get comfortable with the camera equipment before jumping it and always seek out a experienced free fall camera person to help guide you through the learning process.

When you’re not skydiving, how do you like to spend your spare time?
When I’m not jumping I like to spend my time with my wife and two daughters or out shooting photography of landscapes or other sporting activities.

Tell us something that is little known about your yourself?
If I told you something that’s little known about me it wouldn’t be little known anymore J

What’s on the cards for Craig O’Brien in 2016?
As for 2016, I’m looking forward to numerous events here at Perris and abroad. P3 will rev-up right after a season of Canadian Skyhawks training. P3 will be organizing their 3 May events, Power Play in June, then 16- 60 way in Sept. The Skyhawks do 8 weeks of training that I’m honored to have been part of for the past 18 years. Bigway Boogie in Ecuador 2nd week in March. Hopefully by the end of the year I’ll have another story or 2 about fun movie projects.

Christy Frikken

Christy Frikken is a highly successful competitive 4-way skydiver and skydiving coach based out of Skydive Perris.

When, where, why and how did you make your first skydive?
Ranch 2001 tandem skydive.

How many total jumps do you have now?
About 12,500.

How many hours do you estimate to have flown in the wind tunnel?
Really difficult to even estimate since I was a tunnel instructor for a couple years. I’m not sure what would even count (standing in the door, assisting people in the wind, coaching, or just training).

What is it about Skydive Perris that makes you want to work, play and train here?
Perris for me has always represented the amazing possibilities. There are so many great people and resources here every crazy thing I dream of can be achieved.

How did you get into 4-way and what do you love about it?
I decided 4-way was going to be my career when I had a couple hundred jumps. I very carefully crafted a plan and kept my programming job for a bit. My first move was actually to Eloy but despite the awesome facilities I found it difficult to find a role at the dropzone with my experience level. Luckily I met Dan BC there who was just moving to Perris. He presented some awesome opportunities in CA so there I went.
I was a tunnel instructor for a couple years before co-founding Perris Fury. After Fury disbanded I joined SDC Rhythm XP and did some amazing 4-way across the US. There is quite a lot of neato stuff in the middle of those projects, but that is shortish version.

Who are your skydiving mentors?

Dan BC has been the biggest influence along with many former Airspeed members and my former teammates.

What canopies do you jump and why?

Katana 97. I am not a competitive swooper and I find these are the right amount of zippy for me.

What advice do you have for anyone who is looking to be part of a 4-way team?

Ask everybody about it! Even if you think you are not a good fit or they are not interested be aggressive about getting the word out. If you are persistent eventually you will find a group with compatible goals.

When you’re not at the drop zone or flying in the wind tunnel, how do you like to spend your spare time?

Running, tinkering with computers, playing video and board games.

What did you do prior to being a full-time skydiver?

I was a software engineer.

Tell us something that is little known about your yourself?

I am sometimes called Crispy Chicken.

What’s on the cards for Christy Frikken in 2016?

Lots of cool events and coaching at Perris! I have been traveling around training for the last few years and I am looking forward to being closer to home more often. It will give me a chance to do some cool formation skydiving events that I have been planning for a while.

How well do you know your emergency procedures?

I’m asking the question because it has become a big issue in the sport. Most skydivers perform their Emergency Procedures (EPs) correctly if asked to demonstrate them. Most can write down the correct answer if taking a written test. But have you trained them to the point of muscle memory? Are the perfect EPs an instinctive response to recognizing a malfunction? If faced with a high pressure, physically strenuous, time sensitive situation are you ready to execute your EPs perfectly and without hesitation? Unfortunately, the honest answer to these questions is too often ‘no’.

Far too many people do not know their emergency procedures anywhere near as well as they need to. As the DZ Manager of one of the world’s largest drop zones, any time I see someone pull too low, or have an AAD fire, I always sit them down and speak to them. Together we try to figure out how they got down there so we can be sure they know what to do differently to be certain it never happens again.

One beautiful, busy day at Skydive Perris we had two AAD fires within an hour of each other. One of the individuals had about 100 jumps and initiated deployment at 4,000 feet. He had a slow speed malfunction, cut away at a high enough altitude but didn’t pull his reserve before his AAD fired. The other had about 400 jumps, started his deployment at 3000’, had a pilot chute in tow, cut away and went for his reserve but not before his AAD beat him to it.

Since both of them had initiated deployment plenty high there was no reason they should have ended up still in freefall so dangerously low. I asked them to demonstrate their emergency procedures for me. They both did. Then I asked them to talk me through the malfunction, their thought processes and show me what they did. Neither of them executed their emergency procedures correctly! They both did something different in the air than the intended emergency procedures they had just shown me! One of them ‘reached’ before he ‘looked’. The other reached with one hand when his plan was to have both hands on both handles.

How is that possible? Skydiving equipment has advanced so much. The emergency procedures we have to do when faced with a malfunction are simple and easy to execute. Way too many fatalities – and more close calls than we can even count – happen because we don’t perform these procedures correctly within the time we have.

These three simple ideas could save your life:

#1 Practice your EPs

Emergency procedures are not practiced enough. I’ve asked many people how often they practice their EPs. The most common answer I hear is “I practice them before each jump.” That sounds like it should be plenty but the fact is, it’s not. Based on that, the jumper with 100 jumps had practiced EPs a total of 100 times. That is not nearly enough to develop the instinctive muscle memory you will need to save your life in the few seconds you have.

There are a few different ways to execute emergency procedures. Each one of them will work as long as you perform it correctly and immediately. None of them take more than five seconds. In a minute you could practice your EPs 12 times. Since your life depends on it, why not take five minutes each day and go through your EPs 60 times. We dirtdive a jump for 15 minutes but usually don’t practice saving our lives for even 5 seconds

You want to be a Badass?
Be a badass at performing your EPs.

– Dan BC

Do your EPs ten times a day for 30 seconds, or five times a day each for a minute. But somewhere in your day find five minutes you can dedicate to practicing EPs (every day, not just jumping days) and you will have rehearsed them to the point that they are totally automatic. You’ll see a malfunction and will instinctively perform the perfect procedures without hesitation.

#2 Stay one step ahead

We are too often surprised when our parachutes don’t work correctly and take too long to make the decision to cut away. Stay one step ahead. **Expect** your parachute to malfunction every jump. Be pleasantly surprised when it doesn’t. If you have any doubt at all about whether your parachute is good or not, it’s not. A good parachute doesn’t give you any doubt.
Don’t wait until you are faced with a stressful malfunction situation to decide what you are going to do. **Decide right now that if you aren’t 100% sure you have a good canopy over your head you will cut away without hesitation.**

#3 Pull at a safe altitude

If you don’t have enough altitude even well executed EPs won’t save you. USPA’s minimum deployment altitude is 2,500 feet. To deploy by 2,500 feet you need to be waving off no lower than 3000 feet. If you are lower you may not have the time you’ll need.
These three simple ideas could save your life. They’ve saved mine on more than 20 malfunctions. Please consider them and share them
